Hospital de Sant Pau Announced as One of the Venues of ModComFest Dedicated to Max Richter
One of Barcelona’s most extraordinary landmarks, Sant Pau offers a setting of exceptional beauty and cultural significance, making it a fitting location for a festival celebrating innovation, atmosphere, and modern musical expression. Its inclusion in the festival adds another iconic destination to an edition centred around the music and artistic vision of Max Richter.
Designed by celebrated Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the complex was built between 1902 and 1930 as a revolutionary model of healing architecture. Conceived as a “garden city” hospital, the site features interconnected pavilions surrounded by landscaped grounds, where light, openness, and harmony were seen as essential elements of wellbeing.
In 1997, Hospital de Sant Pau was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the Palau de la Música Catalana. Today it is recognised as the largest Modernist complex in Europe, admired for its mosaics, stained glass, elegant ornamentation, and visionary urban design.
After serving as a working hospital for more than eighty years, the site was restored and reopened in 2014 as a cultural and knowledge centre. It now hosts exhibitions, educational initiatives, international institutions, and major public events.
As one of the announced venues of ModComFest, Hospital de Sant Pau will provide audiences with a unique encounter between architecture and music — a spectacular environment in which to experience a festival dedicated to the timeless and evocative world of Max Richter.
